MC-IF Demonstrates End-to-End Real-Time VVC Streaming on Mobile Devices at IBC 2026

IBC demonstration shows VVC software encoding, transmission, decoding and playback across Qualcomm-powered mobile devices

AMSTERDAM — Sept. 11, 2026 — The Media Coding Industry Forum (MC-IF) will demonstrate an end-to-end real-time mobile streaming workflow using Versatile Video Coding (VVC/H.266) at IBC 2026, showing how the emerging compression standard can support live video using software-based encoding and decoding on mobile devices.

Presented in collaboration with NHK, the demonstration uses the Alibaba DAMO encoder and decoder running on Qualcomm-powered devices to capture, encode, transmit, decode and display a live VVC stream.

The workflow begins with one mobile device capturing 1080p30 camera video and encoding it in real time using the DAMO266 VVC encoder. The resulting VVC bitstream is transmitted over Wi-Fi to a receiving device, where DAMO266 software decoding enables real-time playback.

The demonstration brings together the major components required for a live VVC workflow, including real-time software encoding on the sender, network transport of the encoded stream and real-time software decoding and display on the receiver.

By implementing both encoding and decoding in software, the demonstration illustrates how VVC can be incorporated into mobile live streaming environments without limiting the workflow to dedicated hardware implementations.

The demonstration also provides a practical example of how VVC can move beyond file-based or offline compression applications into real-time communications and live video workflows. That capability could become increasingly important as video providers evaluate newer compression technologies for delivering higher-quality video while managing bandwidth requirements across mobile and other network environments.

“This demonstration provides a practical view of VVC operating across a complete real-time mobile streaming workflow,” said Aytac Biber, Director of Product Management, Qualcomm. “Showing live capture, software encoding, network transmission, software decoding and playback provides the industry with another example of how VVC can be implemented in real-world applications.”

MC-IF will demonstrate the technology during IBC 2026 in Amsterdam, Sept. 11-14, at Hall 2–2.B13.
